a brief introduction…

Born in the US a child of immigrants in the 70s, I never fit in to either homeland, despite being connected both. Feeling like an outsider from being actively Othered, I sought a way in.  I observed everything, found patterns, saw where people bond, and looked for the ways we truly communicate. That dive into human existence and connection drives my work. The linguistics of mark-making seemed to cross time and space, and gave me a way to find intersectional communication beyond conventional language. If we are divided by words, we are unified in our response to the arts; we draw in mark, in note, in body. My work is process and materials based, decoding our humanity and ability to communicate over time, space, culture, through mark-making. I am obsessed with mortality and struggle with obsessive/compulsive issues. Control versus chaos. Meditation and repetition, disruption and rhythm.  So the marks serve to both create connections a while simultaneously deconstructing my own psyche and bringing peace to my racing mind, both expansive as well as introspective.

I develop marks from researching myriad primitive imagery from cave paintings to Indian kolam to kids’ drawings, drawing upon the most poignant symbols to provoke responses and tell stories. I explore the marks via the process, and the process becomes the subject. Symbols that have unlimited potential and work in repetition are the most interesting, as they create rhythm, meditation, and become More.  Through paint, pen, or found and mixed media, I join the ancestors in speaking about the mortality of being, screaming "I was here"!  The marks and their relationships are symbols for human experience. In a way, it is like recoding a Rosetta stone, revealing a new language, which means that I get to add and expand my vocabulary as it develops organically. The random is the system- chaos theory.

I am particularly interested in how much of the work is made by women and femmes, be it documentation or meditation and decoration. The humanity inherent in making the mark gives the viewer a point of entry as their eyes trace the motions, their bodies feel the movements, their hearts feel the colours. The marks are specific enough to feel familiar, visceral, leading next to a psychological, metaphysical journey. Through symbols and marks, I create a new language for human experiences, stories untold, and invite you to journey in to my mindscapes, places beyond words and time, yet full of memories, stories, and fantasy.
